In God We Trust
How one Dad inspired another Dad to start something many Sons can benefit from for generations to come
My name is Justin and when I was a young boy, I was given a task by my father that came with great responsibility and even risk of harm. Our family lived on 5 acres of land and we maintained about half of that as trimmed grass. My father had purchased a John Deere riding lawn tractor to accompany the push mower and weed-whacker that we already had. After testing the new lawn tractor himself for a season, my father decided to train me to operate this fine machine and taught me how to efficiently mow that big lawn with it safely. At less than 10 years old I felt like I was already driving a vehicle; complete with gas pedal, brake and steering wheel. Not only that, but this vehicle was fully capable of shredding up and spitting out whatever fell victim to its fierce power. I remember being very excited to operate that machine! My dad would actually do the trimming with the push mower so that I could ride in style. It took me all day to mow that yard, but I loved every minute of it.
Fast forward to today...I am now a father of 3 amazing and beautiful children who mean so much to me. One of them is a son and his name is Josiah. (My oldest daughter named him from what she read in her Bible at 4yrs!) Josiah and I have been working together off and on with mowing a few lawns in the neighborhood in addition to our own 1/3 acre lawn with a push mower, weed-whacker and blower for some time now as Josiah has been in training for general lawn mowing. All the while, I have been dreaming of having a John Deere lawn tractor like the one I used to drive so proudly about the yard back in Elwood, Illinois. To make a long story short (cliche, but necessary), we eventually found a way to purchase a used John Deere lawn tractor almost exactly like the one I remember. Josiah is already getting good at driving it and he seems to be just as excited about it as I was at his age. I'll be the one to push the push mower and do the trimming (Lord knows I need the regular excersise) and Josiah will drive the tractor. And together will mow many a lawn with humble dignity and honor, knowing full well that our Lord, Jesus is before us and behind us all the way.
To take things one (or 2) step(s) further, I have decided to build a viable small business with my son and our equipment, starting right here in our home neighborhood of Royal Forest, Conroe, Texas. I hope to create an enjoyable AND educational experience for my son that will help him to be a successful enteurprenuer and business owner in the future. And I don't believe this kind of thing is taught in school (or elsewhere) as it probably should be. So, furthermore, I would offer this small business model as a 'template' for other fathers and mothers to use for their sons and daughters to learn a valuable lesson and skillset and maybe even make some money too. My plan is to be transparent enough with this business model as it evolves, that many families might benefit from the practical ideas and insightful, experience-based information which will be added to this site as available from the field. In the field, the grass keeps growing and someone keeps mowing, so why not become that someone in your neighborhood?
